HOMES WITHIN THE CITY
Adding homes to an established neighbourhood is also a question of how people live. Bloom Architects approaches multiplex and missing-middle housing through the qualities that make an individual home feel considered: a clear entrance, natural light, privacy and a connection to the outdoors.
Our Toronto projects explore these relationships at different scales, from fourplexes and sixplexes to garden suites and laneway housing. Each begins with the particular conditions of its site, rather than a single model of density.
INDIVIDUAL HOMES, SHARED CONTEXT
Density begins with the everyday.
The arrangement of entrances, windows and outdoor spaces shapes how homes sit alongside one another. At the Beaches and Scarborough multiplexes, recessed balconies and setback upper levels also help mediate the scale of the buildings along the street.
A narrow lot presents different questions from a site with a rear laneway. The Toronto Contemporary Fourplex pairs a four-unit main building with a detached garden suite, while Strachan brings eight residences to two lots through semi-detached buildings and rear laneway houses. These are distinct responses to their sites, not interchangeable templates.
