TORONTO
TRADITIONAL
LANEWAY HOUSE
Situated in Toronto’s vibrant West End, just steps from Trinity Bellwoods Park, the homeowners sought to reimagine their underutilized lot by replacing an aging detached garage — fronting an existing rear laneway — with a thoughtfully designed two-storey laneway house.

Respecting the historical character of the main residence, a red brick Victorian-era home with distinct architectural detailing, Bloom Architects set out to create a modern complement that visually ties into the original structure while standing confidently on its own. The resulting design draws from a cohesive material palette: red brick cladding with buff-colored soldier course accents, black-framed windows and dormers, a traditional slate roof, and expansive sliding glass doors that open directly onto the backyard, enhancing indoor-outdoor living.

The laneway house is designed for both functionality and flexibility. The ground floor serves as a spacious two-car garage, maintaining practical use of the site. Above, the second level includes two bedrooms with a shared bathroom, a bright open-concept kitchen, living, and dining area, and a separate laundry room — providing a fully self-contained living space that can accommodate extended family, guests, or future rental income.
