Prince Edward County Rural Retreat

Prince Edward County Rural Retreat is a custom home conceived as a contemporary response to its rural setting. A series of simple gabled volumes draws on the familiar language of the farmhouse without reproducing it, creating an architecture defined by proportion, texture, and a close relationship with the landscape.

About the project

The composition brings together warm stucco, weathered shingles, and dark-framed windows in a restrained material palette. An oversized chimney provides a clear architectural anchor, while the changing heights and orientation of the rooflines give each volume its own presence within a cohesive whole. Deep openings and a recessed entrance introduce shadow and depth, allowing the character of the house to emerge through a small number of carefully considered elements.

At the garden side, generous glazing connects the house visually with the terrace, pool, and surrounding planting. Stepped transitions and layered landscaping soften the meeting of building and ground, extending the composition beyond the walls of the home.

Rather than relying on complex forms or decorative gestures, the design finds expression in the rhythm of its gables, the weight of its walls, and the contrast between solid and open. The result is a rural retreat intended to feel both familiar and distinctly of its time, with an enduring character rooted in its setting.
