Set along the rugged shoreline of a Bella Lake in Huntsville, this contemporary cottage is conceived as a contemporary retreat shaped by its dramatic natural setting. The design breaks the residence into a series of distinct volumes that follow the contours of the exposed Canadian Shield, creating a composition that feels carefully placed within the landscape rather than imposed upon it.
About the project
A restrained palette of locally inspired stone, dark metal cladding, warm wood soffits and expansive glazing gives the home a distinctly northern character. Two principal wings are connected by a transparent central link, allowing views through the house toward the lake while creating a clear separation between living and private spaces. Generous roof overhangs, tall windows and double-height glazing frame the surrounding forest and water while bringing natural light deep into the interior.
The architecture balances strong, ordered forms with the irregularity of the site. Natural rock outcrops and native planting are preserved wherever possible, allowing the landscape to flow around the building and reinforcing the connection between the home, the forest and the shoreline. A detached garage is positioned independently from the main residence, completing a quiet collection of buildings within the landscape.
