RENTAL BUILDING

The Archer is a seven-storey mixed-use residential building designed for a prominent Toronto main street. The project introduces new housing within an established urban neighbourhood while drawing heavily from the scale, materiality and architectural character of the surrounding streetscape.

Rather than relying on an expansive glass façade, the design uses warm red brick, deeply recessed openings and a strong rhythm of masonry arches to give the building a sense of permanence and familiarity. Private balconies are carefully integrated into the façade, while a recessed upper level reduces the perceived height of the building from the street.

At grade, large glazed openings create an active and inviting frontage, with the residential entrance clearly defined by a simple dark metal canopy. Contemporary detailing, black metal accents and generous glazing provide a modern counterpoint to the traditional masonry expression.

The result is a building that feels contemporary without feeling disconnected from its context, adding density to the neighbourhood while maintaining the warmth, texture and human scale of Toronto’s traditional main streets.
