The Dundas Street Residence is a contemporary third-storey addition to an existing two-storey mixed-use building in Toronto. The ground floor retains its commercial function, while the second and third floors are reimagined to accommodate modern residential living.
About the project
Due to the age and limitations of the original century-old structure, the existing framework will be fully replaced to allow for a more flexible, open-concept layout tailored to current lifestyles. The new design introduces a structural system of exposed wood columns and beams, which not only support the building but also serve as warm, expressive architectural features throughout the interior.
The third floor is set back from the street to reduce its visual impact and maintain a sensitive relationship with the urban fabric. This upper level opens onto a partially covered, landscaped terrace — a private outdoor retreat that expands the living space and brings natural light and greenery into the home.
Balancing heritage context with modern design, the Dundas Street Residence offers a refreshed take on urban infill, combining functionality, material warmth, and architectural clarity.
