The homeowners were instantly captivated by the property’s lush landscape and expansive backyard — a rare find in the heart of an established neighbourhood. At the time of purchase, the site was occupied by a deteriorating 1960s single-storey bungalow, which, though structurally sound at its core, had long since outlived its intended lifespan.
About the project
Rather than demolish the entire structure, Bloom Architects proposed a thoughtful and sustainable approach: retain and repurpose the original foundation while introducing a completely new ground floor and a carefully scaled partial second storey above. This strategy not only reduced construction waste but also respected the established footprint and grading of the site.
The result is a striking reinterpretation of the modern farmhouse — fresh, elegant, and rooted in context. The home is clad in crisp white board and batten siding, contrasted by a sleek black standing seam metal roof. These traditional yet modern materials provide a clean and timeless aesthetic.
Anchoring the composition are large-format limestone panels, used to accentuate the front entryway and new chimney. These elements introduce warmth, texture, and a sense of permanence to the overall material palette, creating a balanced dialogue between contemporary design and classic rural vernacular.
